Now some of you may be new to the personal development world and some may not. I definitely know I was when I started my home business. I thought I knew it all, that I was a positive person with a positive attitude. Boy, did I have a lot to learn!!! For my first two months in business, yes I recruited over 61 people (And had a BLAST doing it!). Okay, that was amazing, awesome, FANTASTIC! The thing was though is I did not know who I was as a Leader or even as an Individual yet. I had not worked on building me so I can then help others to be successful and build themselves.
So I lost my way a bit…
I got a little discouraged and as you say was “Giving Myself A Pity Party”. See… I hit a wall about three months into my business. My wall wasn’t my recruiting abilities but it was ME (my Inner Self, my Inner Being). I did not know the secret just yet to knowing who I was on the inside (really is not a huge secret once you know, because it was already there). Yes, I have always had a ‘positive attitude’… but what I didn’t realize at the time is that it goes MUCH DEEPER than that.
Your Inner Self is what brings you happiness, Your Inner Being is really WHO YOU ARE… Not what your Past Experiences, Thoughts and Relationships are. Your feelings control your attitude, not your mind. And your true feelings come from your INNER SELF… You already have it there! You just have to be OPEN to it!
Yes, your mind and thoughts are a large part of it of course but it is not the main source to a positive you. Now, what is great is I had an amazing Friend and Mentor who really helped me see the light and I was lucky enough to learn early on into my business how important personal development was. Since that day I worked hard to change my mindset, my feelings and my heart’s direction.
I feel so blessed now that I did that because it opened a WORLD of opportunities to me. And, I was able to pass that on to others and now change other’s lives! What a great feeling to help someone without getting something in return… trust me it is one of the best feelings you could ever have!
My reason for sharing this with you is that I can relate to many reading this post. I was there, I am human just like everyone else and I definitely had my walls and obstacles to overcome! I hope that you learn from my mistakes and start RIGHT NOW working on personal development.
What is Personal Growth and Development?
- Continuely building and growing as a person and Leader.
- Striving and focusing on who you are and how you can give back to those around you and others.
- Building a confidence and passion that will shine through and you will pass on to others.
- To build confidence and passion is through encouragement and inspiration on a daily basis. Work on who you are, utilize books, audios, live calls, programs, movies, etc. Anything you can get your hands on that will encourage and inspire you.
- Find those who are already there, those who Motivate, Inspire and Intrigue you. Learn from them and do what they do!
- This will keep you in the Mind Set of… “If they can do it, I can do it”… “If I can do it, my team can do it”
- This is important so you can Mentor and build those who will be following in your footsteps or just those you are simply helping along your path in life. So they can acheive their dreams and in return your dreams will come true.
WHY is Personal Development Important?
- Once you have confidence and passion with in yourself… You will shine through and become contagious.
- Others will want to learn from you and follow in your footsteps.
- In return your Life, Team and Business will grow and grow in a positive direction.
Think about this… Say you read a mystery novel every night before bed. You put in a chapter or two before falling asleep. Now… think about this… You took that mystery novel and replaced it with a personal development book or put on an audio through your headset. What do think your results will be over one month, two months, three months? You will see a huge difference in your mindset, how you feel and how much your life and business starts growing. It will become something you have to do each day! Something that you would RATHER do than watch your favorite TV show!
So… my task for you is to get yourself a few good Personal Development Books, Videos and/or Audios and implement reading or listening to them everyday. Set aside 30 minutes a day to WORK ON YOU (or more is great). Make it part of your ‘TO DO’ List. It will get done and you will eventually realize how much you cannot live without it. I encourage each and everyone of you not to just do this for yourself but do it for those around you and anyone that comes in your path each day.
In Conclusion…
Learn about you, grow yourself daily as a Leader and Individual. Doing this will allow you to work towards your goals and dreams with the positive feeling and mindset to making them happen, which will allow them to seem much easier to achieve and grasp. Then over time it will become just a habit that you do day in and day out… and then ‘MAGIC’ starts happening and you will start ATTRACTING the same type of people in your business and life.
Are you working ON YOU? Please share below anything that Inspires, Encourages or gives you true roots to Personal Development! I always appreciate it and I definitely know others will also! If you do not have anything just yet to share in that aspect… let us know any obstacles, walls or hardships so that we can truly lead you in the right direction of building a better you!
In addition if you felt this helped you or will help someone else you know, please pass it along below by sharing the love on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
To Your Unlimited Success,

Hey Jenn
I know all to well about the Pity Parties, I even wrote about that over on my blog!
I was very new to PD when I first got started. I went on a media fast (still on it) and read like no other, devouring so many PD books it was crazy. And I have to say that it made such a difference to my life and business, I have never been the same again.
I work on my PD each and everyday, usually for at least 30 mins, sometimes more. Its just my way of life now!
thanks so much for sharing this great post

I got my first taste with PD when my friend gave me Jerry Clark’s Colors to Success cd’s to help me with my business…little did I know how much it would change my life! I actually understood HOW to talk to my husband and prospects. That is one of the major reasons why I give an overview of this info for free on my blog because it really changed SO much!

Jenn,
Some years ago, I was listening to an audio that referenced personal development and how it should be part of your life.
The speaker referred to his vehicle as “Rolling Success University” (RSU). What he said was that if you listen to nothing but personal development in your car, throw your television away, and read a personal development book for at least 30 minutes per day over a four year period, that was like getting at least a Bachelors degree in Personal Development.
Your Bachelor of Science degree in PD from RSU will be worth far more to you than any degree from another institution.
Excellent post. Thank you for it!

@Yemi Totally cool! I truly loved this… it is so very on point! I personally never watch TV anymore (don’t like to) and have replaced my radio time in the car to audios that focus on personal development! In addition I read a TON! I love to read and feel it provides such a value into your growth! Thanks for the contribution! You are wonderful.

HI Jennifer,
thanks for praising the necessity of personal development when it comes to business building. From my own experience and the observation of others, I think the biggest issue most people have when it comes to building a true business is their need of “instant gratification” rather than “delayed gratification” – we are all trained to work and get paid instantly. To overcome that, we need to do – personal development.
A great post.
Take care
Oliver

@Oliver I definitely agree that “instant gratification” is very much an issue the world has now a days. Those who become truly successful in this Industry truly understand that building a business takes time and with the work, dedication and heart will come the results (and much more!)… very well said! Thank you for sharing!

Great post, Jennifer! I know that personal development has helped me. It has been nine days since I decided to do the “golden hour” (reading for growth) when I wake up, and I’ve noticed that my blog traffic has gone up dramatically. I don’t think it was a coincidence that it happened at about the same time I did the golden hour. Personal development is great for helping us grow in our business!

Hi Jenn,
My personal development journey had quite a similar start to yours – I started with a positive attitute, big ambitions, a strong commitment, and self-confidence in my own ability to be successful. But the deeper I go into self-growth, the more I realise that there is so much more to learn! I’m truly embracing the process and challenge of self-realisation, and feel so blessed to be connected to people who share the same commitment!
Personal development is a life-long process, and I completely agree with your title: it is a process which is essential to business AND life. Your business will only grow as much as you grow, I firmly believe that.
Thanks for an empowering post!

@Justine So wonderful to see another in the community with a similar story! Isn’t wonderful how much you learn about yourself when you work on Personal Development… It truly brings out who you truly are… (which was already there in the first place, just have to be open to it!). Thanks for the wonderful contribution!

Hi Jennifer,
I also became a learner of PD myself ever since I started my business and I can honestly say that had made a huge difference in my way of thinking and most importantly in my life. I also have it written down on my to do list and after you do it a couple times it becomes a Ritual. I usually like to carry cd’s in my car and I listen to them when my kids allow me to
Thanks for sharing such a great post!

Jennifer,
PD almost becomes addictive – in a good way! I’ve found that as I am on this journey and find myself at a pity party, I’ll go grab one of the books I have going and read for a bit. Works like a charm, and I KNOW that I am not wasting time (as opposed to flipping on the tube.)
Great stuff, Jen! Have a fantastic day!

@Elizabeth It definitely is! It is so amazing how just 10 minutes of reading a book can overcome any pity party or ‘discouraging moment’… let them float on by and inspire yourself to a better day!
